Reza Aramesh finds in photography an ideal medium in which to meld his interest in the history of painting, film and literature with contemporary socio-politics. His visual material is drawn from the media’s images of the last fifty years of disputes in the Middle East. In static frames akin to still-life painting, particular events are restaged using non-professional actors within the incongruous settings of a stately historic house or lavish modern apartment. An intriguing subversion of character and place, Aramesh’s elegant compositions expose the subtle human tragedies of modern day conflict.
