‘There Goes the Neighbourhood,’ Bita Fayyazi, B21 Gallery, 10th March - 5th April 2009
The sculpture and installation artist Bita Fayyazi, after her highly acclaimed project at L’Espace Louis Vuitton in Paris, presents her latest creations at B21, transforming the gallery space into the hustle and bustle of the busy streets of her native Tehran.
What Fayyazi terms the ‘There Goes the neighbourood’ is a collection of disparate figures, at once typical, sincere and ironic. She captures the odd diversity of life that proliferates on the streets of her native Tehran and infuses each character with this particular detail that reveals the true self. From self-absorbed body builders to trendy Westernised ‘wanna-be’ kids, uncaring fathers or blatantly snobbish family groups; from traditional chadori women to garish prostitutes, the artist encompasses them all in her piercingly accurate commentary on life in Iran today.
